While we’ve all witnessed the Musou template ruthlessly applied to franchises as diverse and, occasionally, ill-fitting as Gundam, Fist of the North Star, Berserk, Warriors Orochi, The Legend of Zelda, One Piece, Fire Emblem, Dragon Quest and Persona, Touken Ranbu Warriors hews closely to the default Warriors-style of gameplay. Captured on Nintendo Switch (Handheld/Undocked) This time-travelling fantasy-based framework allows Omega Force/Ruby Party more leeway to play with the Musou formula than a standard Dynasty Warriors game could, but unfortunately, this blank canvas is put to little creative use. Each team leader is the personified representation of a historical Japanese katana (sword) pulled from various points in Japan’s history. The first team features three characters, the second features four, the third and fourth teams both offer three characters, and the fifth team features two. The Touken Danshi are organized into five teams. If it wasn’t for the odd time limit, there would be almost no pressure to compete at all. If you let your character – out of a variety of 15 playable characters – stand around on the battlefield, only very occasionally will an enemy step up to poke you before quickly returning to its original position. It feels less like wading into a battlefield teeming with bloodthirsty enemies and more like sweeping an endless succession of floors littered with trash. It’s an almost excessively lax variation on the template, though, in which the actual ‘Easy Mode’ offers almost no resistance at all. So what’s the end result like?įor a game based more or less on a formula established over 20 years ago, Touken Ranbu Warriors – in terms of core gameplay – is nothing new to Musou veterans. Now Koei Tecmo, via developer Omega Force and co-developer Ruby Party, have carved out a niche of a niche of its own. Ironically, this trend more or less began with Capcom’s frankly superior Dynasty Warriors clone, Sengoku Basara, which became wildly popular and span off into all manner of media, becoming something of a cultural phenomenon on its home turf. It’s based on DMM’s (popular in Japan) free-to-play browser-based collectable card game, targeted at Japanese women - specifically a subculture of otaku known as “katana women” – ladies who like to pose with historical Japanese swords. Maybe the next generation of consoles will have better offerings for stateside Gundam fans.Captured on Nintendo Switch (Handheld/Undocked)Īt first blush, Koei Tecmo’s Touken Ranbu Warriors appears to be something of a "My First Dynasty Warriors", or a "Diet" Musou. This game should have been the best of the series, sadly it falls short of even Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2. The character models in this game at least look great, but against the static and dull backgrounds it's not much a graphical leap forward. The general story they're following this time also makes very little sense, with all the different characters and the ways they could have interacted how come the story is so lacking? The music is fair for the most part, although I found the game will usually only play 3 or 4 different tracks, which is weird when it has more than 20 to choose from. Only the Gundams and Ace machines are actually worth playing. While some have praised the vast amount of mobile suit in the game they're all nearly useless as the have very little power, their guns do little to no damage and their combos are short. Right from the get-go problems arose, from the cluttered HUD, levels that seemed really small when compared to other Dynasty games and Allied AI so stupid some missions were just difficult cause your ally would die quick thus ending your game.

This 3rd outing for the series should have been their best, but sadly though it wasn't. I was really excited for this game, I really was.
